Element Vapor Review

One of the more interesting iPhone cases available on the market has to be the line of aluminum cases from Element. One of our administrators here recently purchased the Element Vapor Comp and shared her thoughts. Read on for her complete Element Vapor Comp review to see if this is the case for you.

Design and Quality
The Vapor Comp is a precision-crafted aluminum and polycarbonate case with Element’s signature aesthetics. It works with all models of the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S. It is CNC machined from a solid block of aircraft grade aluminum, anodized, and has laser-engraved graphics rather than graphics that are just printed on. The Vapor Comp cases are made in the USA, one at a time, and are hand inspected. There are three grip details that can be seen on on the right side of the case. These are part of the shock-absorbing inner liner that protects the iPhone if it is dropped. The left side of the case has been completely redesigned and is made from a translucent high impact polycarbonate material that prevents “death grip” signal degradation, which was a problem for some iPhone 4 owners who used last year’s Vapor cases. The two pieces of the Vapor Comp are held together with four stainless steel screws.

Fit and Access
The case is flush and fits snugly to all sides of the iPhone. However, I noticed that there is some play in the left side piece and it can be pulled back slightly. It’s possible that dust will be able to get in through this very slight gap. The volume and lock buttons are easily depressed through the polycarbonate side piece and aluminum lock button on the case. There is easy access to the mute switch and the headphone and dock connector ports and it is compatible with aftermarket cables and headphones.

The ergonomics on the Vapor Comp are improved over last year’s Element cases. This case seems to be made for a right handed user. I was pleased to find that the Vapor Comp fits more naturally in my right hand than the Vapor 4 case did.

Protection
The Vapor Comp has a shock absorbing inner lining and the edges of the case have a slight lip that extends above the back and front glass on the iPhone. An anti-glare screen protector and black suede backplate are included and will protect against scratches on the front and back glass. A colored backplate can be purchased along with the case for an additional $10. The backplate and screen protector are optional and I chose not to install them, so I cannot comment on their quality.

Overall
I am very happy with the Element Vapor Comp case. It has a slim profile, offers protection and enhances the sleek form factor of the iPhone 4 and 4S. It is elegant and manufactured with high quality materials, craftsmanship and attention to detail. It is available in six monochromatic colors.

I highly recommend this product to someone who is looking for moderate iPhone protection and is willing to spend extra for a sharp-looking case that was made with high quality parts and a lot of attention to detail.

Reel Life PossibiliTEAS: My Citrus Teawist

"A woman is like a tea bag - you can't tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water."

This unique concoction was based from one of my old family recipes dating back to the 1980's. I've chosen this beverage to give everyone a feel of what sort of beverage was served on our elders' breakfast tables but with a twist. Now, I'm so proud that I'll be able to contribute something new to this recipe, which makes it my signature Pinoy tea. *wink* I’m a daily tea drinker since 1997. Love the stuff (most of it, anyway). One day, when I got bored with the various teas, I decided to venture out on my own. It started innocently enough. My mom bought Malunggay powder and so I thought why not have it in a tea?! Then I tried adding a splash of honey – YUM! A little bit of this and that and viola, my very own recipe! And, what could be easier than tapping drops of Lemon or Calamansi juice for an instant midday pick-me-up? That’s when I started down the slippery slope.

Name of my own unique Lipton Yellow Label Tea concoction: Citrus Teawist

Ingredients (for every cup): Most are readily available and are less likely costly.

* 70 grams of grated Orange skin (estimated cost: P2.00)
* 70 grams of grated Lemon skin (estimated cost:P3.00)
* 1 teabag of Lipton yellow label tea (estimated cost:(P)
* 236 grams of water (estimated cost: maybe free)
* 3 to 5 teaspoons of honey (estimated cost: P15.00)
* 60 grams of Malunggay leaves (estimated cost: P5.00)
* 20 grams of Lemon or Calamansi juice (estimated cost: P4.00)

Simply follow these procedures:

1. Select good quality Oranges, Lemons and Malunggay leaves. Clean and remove bruised and spoiled particles, then, wash them carefully.
2. Sun-dry half-cup of Malunggay leaves and pulverize. You may also use ready-made Malunggay powder.
3. Using a grater, grate 2-3 pieces of orange and lemon skins.
4. Add Malunggay powder and grated ingredients to one cup of boiling water and boil for 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from heat and strain.
5. Put one teabag of Lipton yellow label tea and leave to infuse for 2-3 minutes.
6. Add honey until desired amount of sweetness is achieved.
7. Squeeze a few drops of lemon juice. Serve and enjoy!

          Maybe I'm one of the people in Pinas who can't live a day without tea! If I don't have tea for one day I get a headache, but if I do have tea it soon disappears. I'm just addicted to it because it's also my daily dose of happiness and in my own opinion, the best healthy addiction one could ever have. :) There so many ways I can enjoy my Citrus Teawist. I'm a Filipino and (bias aside) the best part in the world to spend free time is in Samar! Samar province has her share of nature’s bounty. Among the nature’s jewels which enchantingly lure tourists and local folks includes unexplored mountains and caves which are inhabited by exotic wildlife, pristine shores rimmed by unspoiled coral reefs, cloud-hidden lakes of blue surrounded by multicolored flowers and beautiful beaches and waterfalls nestled beside a mountain.

What better things to do on my travel in Samar but to explore the grandeur of the sea while enjoying its majestic view. Never in my life have I seen a sea creature that really deserves respect. 'Twas indeed a breathtaking experience, that so far, is my most unforgettable travel experience. I was scared but that feeling was suppressed by the excitement brought upon seeing the king of ocean.

The Samar Sea is a small sea within the Philippine archipelago, between the Eastern Visayas and Luzon.

It is bordered by the islands of Samar to the east, Leyte to the south, Masbate to the west, and Luzon to the north. The sea is connected to the Philippine Sea to the north via San Bernardino Strait, to Leyte Gulf to the southeast via San Juanico Strait, to the Visayan Sea to the southwest, and to the Sibuyan Sea to the northwest via Masbate Pass and Ticao Pass.

Where do I see myself by 2020? I came to Palo, because of my parents. They always worked hard to help other people. My parents were able to teach me a lot about helping the less fortunate people, because they love to help others so much. However, they were good mom and dad in our house. Whatever they did, I was proud of them.

My parents made me have a future dream. I’ve always wanted to become a basketball player, but as I grew, I wanted to become a doctor like Luis Mendiola, the greatest doctor in town. The reason is because I think it’s the best way to help others. There are a lot of people over the world who are suffering from sickness. However, they’re not able to get medical treatment. They are sick because of their bad environment, war, or poverty. By 2020, I will remedy as many people as I can.

There are many things I can do as early as now. First, I have to pray for the wisdom everyday. I will study a s hard as I can and I am confident because I enjoy every subject in my school. I will grow my stamina, so, I wouldn’t get tired or lazy when I study for college. But of course I want to learn English at EF Englishtown sns.englishtown.com to help me better achieve my goals.

I see myself graduating at a medical college. I will do my best to reach my life goal. Before 2020 ends, I want to go to a poor community where people are not getting enough medical treatment. When I saw people suffering because they didn’t have money for food or money to get medical treatment, it was painful to see. I will build my own clinic. I would also marry, so that it will be a great help. As Luis Mendiola did, I will also teach kids that can’t go to school. I would do anything to help poor people.

After I work as a doctor, I want to become a good husband and father. I will be the breadwinner so my wife wouldn’t work. I will let my future wife become a good mother, who teaches my children good things. I will be a great dad, who my children are always proud of. Haaaay, can't wait for year 2020.

Why I Love the Philippines:

Delicious Food – Of course, this is the first thing I’ll mention. Because for me, Filipino food is just the best food in the world. I don’t like food in other Asian countries much because they’re too spicy. And I don’t like food from all the other countries, because they’re too bland. I’m totally biased of course because this is the kind of food I grew up eating, but for my taste, the food in the Philippines is just perfect.

Food Sharing – Still about food haha! Anyway, something I noticed that’s different about Western-style restaurants and Filipino restaurants is the serving size. Western-style restaurants usually have “per plate” menus, meaning that you order a dish that’s ideally for just one person. But in Filipino restaurants, more often than not, the food serving is always for sharing. A plate of rice is good for 4 people. A bowl of sinigang serves 3. Probably because it’s more common for Filipinos to eat in groups of 4 or 5, instead of just 2 or alone. And even when you and your friends order a plate that’s meant to be for just one person, I love how it’s totally ok to ask the other person if you can have some of his/her food. I know it’s impolite in some cultures to take food from another person’s plate, but if you have his/her permission, I really like the fact that it’s totally normal to share.

Mi Casa es Su Casa – I know, this is a Spanish phrase. But it sounds cooler so I’m using it. Anyway, as I’m sure you know, this means “My House is Your House”, and what I mean by this, for the purposes of this blog entry, is that I absolutely love how when you’re in another place (be it another country or another province), it’s almost absolutely okay to stay in the house of a friend or a relative. In fact, they sort of expect it.

I’m immensely thankful to this Filipino custom (if I can call it that) because it saves us a lot of money when we’re traveling. Instead of checking into an expensive hotel, we can just stay at a friend/relative’s house, and for free! Never mind that we all have to share a room or sleep on a mattress or whatever, if it saves us a couple hundred bucks, then I’m all for it. Plus, we get to spend more time with our friends/relatives, because we’ll all be in the same house.

I know this all has to do with different cultures and stuff, but it strikes me as absurd when you’re in the same city as one of your relatives but you still have to check into a hotel. Except if their house is really small/busy, and there’s really no room for guests, then that’s fine. But if not, then it should be ok for relatives to stay. You get to help some people save money. That’s a good thing, right?

Tagalog - As much as I love English and its filthy rich vocabulary, I really love my native tongue the most. It’s just so easy/convenient to be polite with this language. It includes staple words for courtesy like “po” and “opo”, and cheat titles like “Manong” or “Ate” for people on the street who you don’t know the names of. I also love how you can just add “Tito” or “Tita” in front of a name of your friend’s parents and that makes you sound respectful. There’s nothing more awkward for me, than having to call someone as old as my parents by their first name. But then, calling them “Mrs. Last Name” or Mr. Last Name” is just as awkward, so really, Tagalog is very helpful.

Oh, and a special mention to the word “Yiheee“, too. Seriously, how can you not love a language that has a one-word equivalent for the whole “Thomas and Dana sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G” chant?!

Jokes – Especially the ultra corny ones that you hear on the radio. I love that it takes so little to make people laugh here.

Q: Anong difference ng joke sa pagtatanim?
A: Ang joke, biro. Ang magtanim, ‘di biro!

Tagay! – I’m not really a drinker, but I do enjoy those drinking sessions that involve cheap liquor and one glass that you pass around. It’s just not the same as when you’re in a bar where there are a lot of people around you and there’s loud music and whatever.

Philippine Art – visual art, film, music, comic books, literature… everything. I do love art from other countries as well, but I love the art here that’s fused with the culture. But I’m only talking about the original art. Let’s not elaborate on all the Star Cinema/GMA movies that are Hollywood movie rip offs, or all the songs by Hale. Hehehe.

Videoke!! – This is more of a Pinoy thing, and will probably be included if I made a list of all the things I love about Philippines. But anyway… Yeah. Just like in drinking sessions, I love how this is about microphone passing in videoke rooms, and not having to embarrass yourself on stage in front of people you don’t know, like how “karaoke” is in some countries.

Islands! Beaches! – This country is a tropical paradise. Who’d prefer anything else over a paradise?!

Not Wasting Food – I have seen countless shows wherein they have a food fight. It’s like an American tradition of some sort. When I was a kid, it seemed pretty funny. But eventually, when I thought about it, I found it to be really sad. Because, they’re basically wasting food. Perfectly good food, that would’ve helped some families in Africa. :(

In a sort of sick way, I’m kind of glad that we’re still an underdeveloped country, because we know that we shouldn’t take things for granted.

Text Messaging – There’s something different about having time to think of what you’re going to say before saying it, which is why I think text messaging is such a hit here. Because when you’re on the phone talking to someone, your responses are instant and direct. In text messaging, messages can be subtle, and thoughtful. It’s almost like an art.

Pasalubong – I know it’s a pain sometimes, especially when you’re the one giving it. But when you’re the one receiving it, it’s such a joy to know that the person who’s giving you a souvenir, had actually thought of you while he/she was on a trip. It’s like they want to share part of their experience with you, so you can also enjoy what they did, even if you weren’t there. I mean, isn’t that just sweet?

I love my country…

I love her her beautiful landscapes, her clear blue skies...

I love the soil I walk upon…

I love the sun that kisses my face… even on a very hot afternoon when the heat from the asphalt rises up as if to brew my face, I still lover her.

I love her star lit skies.

I love the different seasons…

I love how mangoes and fresh corn trail the wet season.

I love how the nights are very cool during rainy season and I love seeing little kids playing around in the sand with skins that seemed to have been coated with ash.

I love how they sometimes don’t bother to clean their wet noses on those cold mornings.

I love her vibrant Filipino people, how versatile we are…

I love our diverse cultures, and how you can’t go from here to there without encountering, at least, two different languages.

My people, I love their strength and endurance. Uncountable burdens their shoulders have carried… and continue to carry. I hope to be there the day they unload their burdens and stand tall, proud, as a Filipino.

I love my country!

Because it is where I was born!

Because it is where my loved ones have roots!

Because it is beautiful!

Whether you believe it or not, the fundamental issues, such as hair care, there is no right and wrong ways to do it, it's just a matter of choice based on witty decisions. Only knowledge of the proper products and procedure can you achieve the desired health and beauty of your hair. As for me a perfect fashion statement is when you look at your best despite how complex or simple it may be. In my case, I always depend on my crowning glory. Yup, it's my hair who does all the beautification, thus hair care is a must for me.

I remember, last May 16, I was running out of shampoo, and I had to go the nearest convenience store. I wanted to get new shampoo but my dad wouldn’t let me because he didn’t like the store (too pricey daw). But he told me to go in and look at them and tell him what I wanted so he could go grab them at some other store. And standing there in the aisle with hundreds of bottles and all these different brands and claims and colors and bottles, I was overwhelmed.

There were three options - 1. Get the shampoo I had been using all along(been using it for a couple of months but to no avail); 2. Take a new brand/shampoo that you might or might not have heard great reviews about; 3. Run home and research those shampoos some more. I had to choose three, of course. But all that researching makes me really wonder-How can you find the right shampoo for you if there are just SO MANY? I went online and painstakingly researched and alas saw the Sunsilk Co-Creations frenzy on both web and on TV too. Thanks to Sunsilk, just a few strokes of my hairbrush and I'm set to show the world how my hair defines me! And I'm just so excited everytime my expert-touched hair completes my style!

So I have a few helpful tips for you gals and guys who want to look fantabulously fashionable by just caring your hair with the right shampoo:

1.) Look at brands and their reputations. Consider popularity and reliability. Here are some big brands:

****** - I’ve heard that they use a LOT of acid in their shampoos and that they really damage hair in the long run. Personally I agree. I used ****** for a while but it only dried my hair out.

******* - I personally LOVE this brand. But that’s just me. Their reputation for their hair products are amazing. Varieties of smell and pretty good performance. I haven’t really heard many bad reviews about this brand =)

***** - I’ve heard good things about this one too. They pride on reliability, good performance, and good smell, even if they don’t have a wide variety. I haven’t used this but I’ve seen people’s hair when they use this.

********** - Very limited, as in types. I’ve heard they work wonders though. I was considering trying it but they didn’t have the type I wanted. =(

Sunsilk - Good things. Smells good, good product. Different types. Haven’t used it until May 16 but have seen raving reviews. I’ve heard a few negatives, but not that much. So I tried it and guess what, I'm planning to use it for good (sipsip aside).

Remember, the brand doesn’t have to be big-name to be good though. Just be a little cautious. And do a little web-surfing for your brand in mind like what I did on Sunsilk.

2. Consider your hair type - Is it thick or wavy or thin or medium? Some shampoos that work wonders on thick or curly hair can really weigh down thin, delicate hair, for example. Some products specifically say what kind of hair they target. Most are geared toward medium unless said otherwise.

Thin - Barrettes fall out easily, lie very flat on head, dries very quickly

Medium - In the middle. It doesn’t fit either description of thick or thin, but in the middle

Thick - Barrettes have a hard time clipping, very voluminous, takes forever to dry

Wavy - Well, you know what wavy looks like

3. Consider what you want from your hair - Nowadays there are so many things shampoos can do to your hair-straighten in, moisturize it, make it smell good, clean it, clear out dandruff, etc. Consider what you want. Puffy, voluminous hair? Or shiny, nice-smelling hair? Or maybe strong, supple but color-treated locks? You decide, and look specifically for products that target what you want.

4. Smell - It can make all the difference in a purchase. For me, at least. I want my hair smelling great and I’m sure you guys do too. If you can’t decided between two, and one smells amazing and the other smells like chemicals or nothing at all, pick the amazing one. This is a no-brainer but if you want great smells, go Herbal Essences (I know I’m being biased, but I could sit all day smelling their shampoos-lol!).

5. Friend Recommendations - If you have a friend with amazing hair, ask what they use. They’ll be flattered and you’ll get great hair anyway! =)

6. Experience - Just use the brands your parents or siblings use, or use the brand that worked for you before. Why change if you’re completely satisfied?

Headphones in my head

I’m not a person to “need” headphones when I workout, but in a gym I find them very, very good to have. Well, today I forgot them and I’ll take it as a lesson learned to always remember my headphones.

Anyway, today I had planned on running 5 miles on the treadmill, but it just wasn’t going to happen. Headphones make treadmill running much easier, but without them it’s just dull. I did pull out 3.5 miles with a half mile at a 7:53 pace and four quarter-mile intervals steadily faster. The last one was in a 6:58 pace. All told I actually ran 4 miles today since I got in a half mile with my dog earlier. I closed out the day at the gym with 1.1 miles on the elliptical machine.

Now that I’ve gone to the gym a few times, it definitely feels normal. I can’t believe it’s something I have never done before. I think there are so many assumptions about who goes to gyms, but none of them are true. All sexes, genders, races and weight classes are well represented where I go. With the gym moving in a couple of months to a nicer facility, I’m sure the crowd of all faces and body types will continue to grow.

I’m one of those people who love breakfast for lunch and dinner. In fact, I often prefer it. Perhaps this is due to the fact that I rarely eat a “real” breakfast. Usually I grab coffee with cream and some kind of bread in the morning.

Today for lunch I have made myself an almost perfect omelette, filled with grilled onions, bacon, and cheese. To make a superb omelette, there would have to be green peppers in the house. Then I would have grilled those with the onion. Mmm.

However, the iPad gives the user more than the 3.5 inch iPod Touch.

My answer to the question, "What makes me, as a Filipino, happy?" is pretty simple, "I wanna be healthy as well as my family so I can spend jovial time with them!"

I've always wanted to get a complete set of gym tools and equipment but really can't break the bank. But we Filipinos are known for being resourceful. So, being one, I decided to do something that will not cost me bucks, the crazy way, I meant the healthy way. :)

Equation of a happy Filipino: HEALTHY + FAMILY = HAPPY!

A bit disappointed on my PSP Slim and Lite

Having played around with my icy silver PSP Slim and Lite for a few days, we thought it's time I let you know my thoughts. Clearly many areas of the hand held remain identical to the original model to focus on the elements that have changed and how these may or may not improve the PSP experience – which, I suspect, is why you're reading this.

The first thing that strikes you when you slide the new PSP out of its slender 23(L) x 12.5(H) x 8(D) cm box is that it feels too light. Even once you've slotted in the new 1200mAh battery (30g compared with the original's 44g 1800mAh model) – at which point you'll also note the battery cover may open more easily but it's also substantially thinner and more brittle – for an overall weight of 190g (compared with 280g), the hand held feels disconcertingly insubstantial.

The sense of unfamiliarity continues once you fire the unit up. It's nothing to do with the starting sequence, nor the front-end, both of which obviously remain identical (for those that may want to know, Slim & Lite comes with firmware v3.60 installed), but the new flat back is instantly noticeable. As is its enamel-like finish, which in a sense further contributes to the overwhelming cheap plastic feel (as well as showing up fingerprints with remarkable ease – the Ice White model can't come soon enough).

Give it five minutes, though, and the most wonderful transformation occurs. Because far from feeling too light, too flat, too thin, Slim & Lite suddenly becomes the PSP you've always wanted.

Well, within reason, obviously – there's still no second analogue nub, for a start. The point is, almost immediately the old model feels absurdly heavy and cumbersome, while its successor emerges as fresh and decidedly modern. The difference on paper may seem insignificant, but in the hand the contrast is striking.

In play, the improvements continue. The lower profiled face buttons are noticeable, though not as much as the alterations to the D-pad, which now boasts less travel and resistance, making it a considerably more comfortable proposition during prolonged play. The differentiation with regards to the analogue nub, meanwhile, is less pronounced but again the level of resistance appears to have been reduced, resulting in a perceived increase in smoothness and accuracy – although we'll reserve final judgment on this particular aspect until we've tried out a wider range of titles.

One area more directly assessed concerns the other changes to the design. So, for instance, the UMD tray is now a far simpler affair, opening manually (rather than spring-assisted, as previously) but considerably wider, too. The first time it's used it will feel a little odd, mainly because the UMD now sits loose against the tray until it is closed, but you soon appreciate the relatively more immediate, less fiddly nature of the new approach.

Similarly, the repositioned WLAN switch now feels more at home along the top edge of the unit, while the speakers appear to deliver better stereo imaging in their revised location.

Which leaves us with one obvious area of interest: the effect of the UMD cache on loading times. We'll be honest in revealing that we've had little opportunity to try out more than a couple of games, but we did notice a two-second reduction in the return to menu screen after finishing a Sega Rally race. Okay, it's a bit of a blink-and-you'll-miss-it improvement but it could be related to the game.

Indeed, we've seen video evidence online confirming a massive improvement in the in-game transitions of some titles is possible. If the difference in the loading speed of Crisis Core – Final Fantasy VII, for instance, is indicative of what we should expect of future PSP titles, we'd have little issue with arguing that alone is enough to justify the purchase of Slim & Lite.

As it is, there are other reasons, too. More intelligent design and better, more responsive in-game control are two but it's the overall improved feel – an element inherently difficult to quantify – that has us convinced. True, it's nowhere near as radical an overhaul as Nintendo performed on the DS, but then you could argue the PSP was already a generation or two further along the handheld evolutionary line than DS Lite's predecessor.

Nevertheless, we can appreciate current PSP owners will be thinking long and hard about whether the Slim & Lite model offers enough to warrant the upgrade when, at a glimpse, little appears to have altered. And, clearly, we can't tell you what to do.

But if your head is having trouble justifying the purchase, and if it helps, we can at least say this: Don't try the PSP Slim & Lite. Because the moment you do, you won't want to go back to the old model.

For example a tiny flower on you ankle or hip might look truly good but going with a bigger tattoo in those locations might look ungainly and misplaced.

Okay, for those you guys who aren't familiar of Yoshinoya, here's a quick info.

Yoshinoya is a popular chain of fast-food outlets selling a hearty and healthy selection of typical Japanese dishes. There are about seven (not quite sure though) restaurants found all over Philippines (Greenhills Annapolis, Park Square, SM Megamall, Robinsons Galleria, SM North Edsa, SM Mall of Asia, Sta. Lucia East Grand Mall).

Now back to the question: WHY DO I LOVE YOSHINOYA?

Apart from the benefit from the healthy food Japanese resto Yoshinoya offers, service is fast and friendly are the staff, with reasonable prices for piquant Japanese dishes. Well, I'm no Japanese, but I tell you, even Americans would crave for this 'coz the taste is really to die for. Besides, if you can't understand Japanese language (or even English), Yoshinoya has picture menus so it is easy to just point! Based on my fantabulous experience, many of their employees speak very good English so try first before going into mime. :D

Sometime in March 2008, I recall ordering one meal with sauteed beef, Japanese rice, a small soda, and a small oblate container of what looked like our nephew's cute kitchen toy. Well, I was hoping it would be a dessert. Alas, it turned out to be something like a warm and hearty stew. It contained corn, mushrooms, and chicken swimming in a thick paste-like gravy. This stew is a bit of an acquired taste and the veggies were not as good as when fresh, but the quality is still great and due to the moisture-retaining nature of Japanese rice, it is not dried out and hard. That made the rest of the meal tasty. I love the condiments on their dishes such as ginger and soy sauce which gives the food a nice taste. I really had a great time and I enjoyed their food. :D

Yoshinoya is committed to serve the best rice bowls, using only the choicest ingredients. From the tender and high-quality meats, tons of veggies, special spices, down to the finest rice grains, and a secret recipe that goes back more than a hundred years, one is sure that their rice bowls is distinctly Yoshinoya. An Early V-gift!

Apple have just released a new iPod Shuffle last year. Now my sister got it (a 4GB iPod Shuffle) as an early Valentines gift from her boyfriend. All of 4gig (1000 songs) fits inside and it speaks to you! Well it tells you what song and artist you are playing. I’m a massive iPod fan and have everyone since they’ve been released. What can we say? We like our music and gadgets that play music.

As usual, this latest iPod revision is smaller, shinier, and has an even more chasm-like storage capacity than previous incarnations. The real advance, however, is in its ability to pass beads of information to the user as cleanly as if they were their own thoughts.

“Everyday, people are looking for an easier way to pass off other people’s opinions as their own” explains iPod marketing executive Bill Tumble. “It’s largely because they have no idea what’s going on, and finding out requires an awful lot of effort – like reading a book for example.”

The VoiceOver idea came when Tumble was being subjected to an infomercial on TV. As Tumble watched on, it became clear that the presenters had no idea what they were really talking about, but were nonetheless able to hold a convincing discussion by blindly repeating the words put into their heads via discrete headsets. With that in mind, VoiceOver was born.

“What’s so great about VoiceOver content is that users will soon be able to purchase opinions on music and literature without the inconvenience of having to mentally digest the original media in the first place,” adds Tumble. “It really streamlines the whole process of having something to say.”

Think this would be much suited to someone who’s pretty active and on the go all the time.

iPod Nano 5th Generation Media Player

I bought a new iPod Nano 5th generation media player yesterday. A silver 16gb model. One of my primary reasons for the investment was for the video camera built into the device.

Tomorrow I’m running in the Mexico City half marathon and have been wanting a pocket video camera for a while, to take along and record my run. And there are plenty of occasions where it would be nice to have something to hand to record a moment in time.

I haven’t bought it for pure video quality. That would be dumb. A Flip Mino or similar device will ultimately produce better quality footage. But nothing comes in a package this small, let alone with the additional feature list, which I won’t go into seeing as this is a photo blog. For convenience, this is tops.

But how’s it working out for me as a video camera? Well a lot of people have complained about the positioning of the lens. It is in an awkward place. But you can live with it. I dare say you even get used to it. The quality isn’t ultra sharp, but it does a better job that you’d expect, having looked at the teeny weeny lens it’s fitted with. The microphone also outperformed my expectations.

The proof is in the pudding. So below is a very short video of my Friday morning. Apples own promo videos are displayed in small sizes, and all is bright, colourful, sharp. And filmed in situations I’m unlikely to encounter when I want to use it. With a tripod device as well, no doubt! I used it in the worst circumstances. Hand held, walking, night time, overcast early morning….all the worst enemies of a camcorder in general. How do I rate it? If you want to compare it to a Flip Mino….poor. But as I’ve mentioned, that’s not a fair comparison. Compared to my expectations? It bettered them, just. I’m satisfied.

Shoes, Dance With Me!

The last time I was in Davao, I discovered a shoe store–specializing in ballroom shoes. I’d walk by the store window each morning (it was too early for it to be open) and I’d stop–to look, and imagine my feet in a pair. In retrospect, it was a good twist of fortune that I never managed to pass by when it was open as I’ve since become aware of something very, very, very important when it comes to shoes. Size matters. Granted, the concept of size mattering may be true for other things as well, but, this is not a story about those things. Rather, this is a story about shoes, and a girl discovering that she is bigger than she thought she was.

There was a time when I never liked shoes. In fact, I thought one pair was enough–black goes with everything after all. I’d wear my shoes until they were completely functionless, and only then would I venture out for a new pair. In some ways, I do not think I became a ‘full woman’ until I understood that in life, a woman can never ever have too many shoes (in some ways, size matters here too–one pair is too small a collection, and infinity is plenty big).

It must have hit me a few years ago. I cannot remember exactly when, but there must have been a pair of shoes that made me vibrate when I wore them, or perhaps it was the extra height that heels afforded a girl like me. Maybe it all lies in the simple fact that sexy can grow out of a pair of shoes, and I love the idea of that, how completely effortless it is.

And so, vibrating, high and sexy, I began to collect shoes. Some I love more than others, some only go with one dress in my closet. I woman can never have too many shoes, even if it makes one guilty of once travelling to the Dominican Republic with seven pairs (in retrospect, it wouldn’t have been so ridiculous if four of them weren’t black, and if it had been for a meeting longer than four days). In any event, I define much of my womanhood, and what it means for me to be feminine, by my shoewear.

Of course, wearing a pair of heels can feel very much like going to war–especially when you don’t know how big you really are. This was the case with me–up until a couple of months ago. Living in heels isn’t the most comfortable of existences after a long day but I never thought much of whatever pain was associated with wearing any of the shoes that I love. However, I’ve since discovered that, while a little throbbing with heels can and should be expected, shoes shouldn’t make you cry. And I came close–until it was brought to my attention that size does in fact matter in the shoe world and that I needed to stop trying to squeeze my feet into 7s….and try a bigger, better size 8.

Life has improved dramatically since I’ve become a “size matters 8″. I’ve found even more lovely shoes and I love the way my bum moves when I walk (less pain=more bum sway and swagger). Even more, I love how perfectly timed this discovery is. Indeed, there is an element of fate in all of this, now that I have returned, for a second time, to Davao.

On Tuesday, I went walking (in flip flops–a small sacrifice for a bigger, better bum sway later) down Calle Fidel and I found myself outside Alegre Shoes. The same beautiful shoes (red, black, purple) were there in the display window. And, this time, I was there during open hours. Alegre Shoes owner himself was inside (a man in his 80's), with a pencil tucked behind his ear, a shoe box in hand. Not speaking any spanish (beyond being able to order a coffee) I asked if he spoke tagalog. No luck. Then he asked if I spoke bisaya…and off we went, in bisaya, about shoes.

Between the option of ‘professional’ or ’semi-professional’, I’ve opted for a pair of black semi-professional ballroom shoes (though, even at semi-professional, I think too much of my dancing skills). Size 38–anything smaller would have been a waste of a pair of shoes, I know that now. But I would not have known it the last time I was in Davao, and in all likelihood, I would have suffered as a result of any purchase I would have made then.

They will be ready in a month (on the night before I leave Davao). I could have any kind of shoe from a large collection that he offered me (with such a large collection before my feet, it was clear he knew the intricacies and importance of size mattering in his profession).

I’ve chosen a most wonderful pair of shoes and I'm ready to dance my life with it!

My Mommy Mummy

Hi there! I would like you to introduce my friend Mommy Mummy! Tara na at tuklasin ang napakasayang kuwento ni Mommy Mummy!

1. Mommy Mummy is a very close friend of mine.
2. We've been friends for almost 24 years now.
3. She always felt that she is nothing but a lifeless lonely being.

The HTC Magic is very slim and light weight. The vital statistics of the phone is 113 x 55 x 13.65 mm. It is completely touch operated. Its front is dominated by a wide touch screen of 3.2 inches. The screen is very touch sensitive so you don’t have to struggle tooperate the phone. There is a trackball for scrolling screens without finger strokes.

The HTC Magic is a Google phone- it is integrated with Google applications. The phone is a mine of information as it allows you to perform Google search. You can access Gmail through the phone. The Cupcake version of the android interface of HTC Magic lets you mark Gmail messages and assign them to a label or delete them. The other Google applications that can be accessed from the mobile are Google Talk and Google Calendar. The Google Street View application has been conflated with the HTC Magic’s mapping application. It lets you have a virtual view of streets to find out your way.

The HTC Magic has a 3.2 Mega pixel auto focus enabled camera for the masterpiece photograph. It supports only video formats like MP4 and 3GP which is slightly less when compared to the current standards of android mobiles. Its powerful video recording capabilities allows you to post videos directly on You Tube or share videos with friends via e-mail or MMS.

Hi there! I would like you to introduce my friend Mommy Mummy! Tara na at tuklasin ang napakasayang kuwento ni Mommy Mummy!

1. Mommy Mummy is a very close friend of mine.
2. We've been friends for almost 24 years now.

Greetings blogspotters, today I am decidedly recovering from the night before and sadly enough no alcohol was consumed. The evening started badly, finally leaving Patrick’s place at around 5:30 after (almost) finishing a web page with my lappie for the project proposal we’re dying to get done), that’s 90 minutes later that I prefer given our start time of 7:00.

Anyway after fighting my way through the evening rush hour (another good point about leaving at 4pm, no bloody traffic!) I managed to get home and chuck a curry down my neck for dinner (mmmmm Curry!).

Anyway the reason for the haste was the fact that my brother was popping over as we had an issue with some damp in the bathroom that he has just finished decorating! Why couldn’t it have come up before he started decorating in there?

Anyway I needed someone to give me a hand in the loft trying to find where the dampness was coming from. Past experience of my father putting his legs through the ceiling of a bedroom at their old house, one leg each side of a beam, tells me that my sista’ wouldn’t be much help if there was a problem while I was in the loft. So I instructed her to get my lappie and check the web for possible remedies on this so crappy situation. But to no avail.

Anyway between the two of us (my bro), actually mainly him, the damp is narrowed down to being the adjoining wall to our next door neighbor, by this time it’s too late to go knocking on her door that’s a job for today.

Anyway while in the loft my brother spots lots of dust and goes to investigate, as our bathroom has no external walls and therefore no windows, we have an extractor fan in the ceiling that leads to a pipe that pushes the air outside, or at least that’s what it should do, at some point the pipe has become disconnected and the fan is simply blowing the air and dust into the loft.

At this point I climb out of the loft and go down to switch the fan off, reaching into the airing cupboard I hit what I thought was the switch to turn off the fan, but instead hit the switch that turns on the immersion heater.

I am still unsure why the heater was actually switched off, but all I know is that when I threw the switch there was an almighty bang that had me jumping across the landing, not quite sure what was going to come out of the airing cupboard.

Anyway it turns out that I have blown the immersion heater, add to that the fact that the extractor fan needs some tlc, the leak looks like it’s coming from the roof and the fact that the bathroom needs to be have some more decorating to clean up the damage! Grrr!

It’s plurkin’ time!

Not so long ago my sista’ stumbled over a site called Plurk.

In its schema Plurk resembles Twitter and it might not be a wildly popular mini blogging site compared to Friendster and Facebook here in the Pelepens, but it’s really clear and neatly arranged. At the beginning it might be kind of frustrating though, because you have to earn so-called “Karma points”. The more Karma points you earn, the more functions Plurk affords you.

It’s a social network that people will definitely love. It’s quite similar Twitter, but the differences are the responses, badges, and the karma. I’m really hooked on this one and never a day I haven’t plurked with my lappie.

But how do I get more Karma? The first time you log into Plurk, it says that you should update your profile to gain Karma. Writing new posts and making friends will mostly increase your points.

If you were inactive for a few days you Karma will surely drop; because of that I recommend to stop by everyday, just for a few minutes, to take your time to write 3-4 new posts about what you are or were doing. With specific numbers of Karma points you earn more and more smilies and features, like designing your personal profile (or Timeline) with CSS.

It’s very enormous in functions and worth to drop by.

Every plurker has his/her own karma value. It is recalculated every day and can be within these intervals:

0.00 to 21.00: You are in the state of creation
21.00 to 41.00: You are in the state of maintenance
41.00 to 61.00: You are enlightened
61.00 to 81.00: You are so close to Plurk Nirvana
81.00 to 100.00: You have reached Plurk Nirvana!

Some tips on getting more karma:

Updating your profile (picture, location, birth day etc.) will gain you more karma
Quality plurking each day
Responses from other plurkers will gain you karma.

What will lower your karma:

Karma will be lowered if you request friendship and get rejected
Getting unfollowed by friends will lower your karma
Spamming other users will lower your karma
Inactivity for a long period will decrease your karma

I think plurk is killing the other blogsites as more and more bloggers are migrating over. What the hell is plurk you ask? Plurk is the new and improved Twitter type application that lets people stay in contact across the timeline of their day.

You accumulate Karma by attracting friends, plurking in short bursts of 140 character thoughts, and then having people respond to your amazing thought provoking topic such as: “Should I eat daing or Lucky Me noodles for breakfast?”

Plurk provides some really cool advantages in that it allows you to keep in touch with friends you have who are outside of your time zone.

Also if your job doesn’t allow you access to a computer during the night like myself, then you can still see what the hot topics were for the evening amongst your friends and throw all your thoughts on the topic out at the end of the day in one fell swoop.

It is an improvement over twitter in that you can easily follow threads of conversation, and quickly weed out those that are of little or no interest to you. I have found it to be a great way to get back in touch with many of my grade school friends.

Another cool feature is the ability to stream content from YouTube and other platforms as part of the thread to share funny, amusing, or heart wrenching content in an easy to view format.

Plurk however is not without it’s abusers as well. Do you really care to read every action somebody is making, or is it just a ploy to keep the individuals karma up? I find that I tend to fall into a trap at times of just saying “Hi, I’m here”, “Love ya’ bhe” and “Bye, I’m leaving or going to bed.”

So far I have resisted weeding down my friends list, but I think that a few will be getting removed at some point soon, just because I find myself kinda bored sifting through their updates. Public displays of affection are great, but if that is more than 50% of your plurks then the reading populace is gonna get bored with it, and probably a lil annoyed.

There are other social climbers out there just trying to gather attention for themselves by building a huge friends list, and getting their lil boost of ego each day. I am beginning to train myself to focus on getting quality content, and who cares about the karma aspect. Plurk and work don’t go hand in hand anyways.

My biggest complaint about plurk though is that I find myself a lot more tempted to turn a witty observation on the day into a 140 character plurk, and I am avoiding taking the time to actually sit down and develop the idea into a blog post.

It is right there, easy to do, and you get immediate feedback from other users who are monitoring their timelines. Everybody is different, but for me a blog post is work. I enjoy doing it, but it takes me a while to actually sit down and write one. Plurk on the other hand is easy, and I get more comments via plurk than I do via blog post.

I have covered before how I enjoy getting feedback on my posts, even if it is from the bangaws. Therefore, in my case at least I really think Plurk is reducing the number of blogs I write, because I am already communicating my thoughts with my readers through Plurk. It is sort of the low-calorie blogging alternative.

I’m not a loner, or an introvert in that case. I can describe myself as the total opposite of those qualities, I have an astounding number of friends but few I considered genuine, I can make new ones in an instant, I talk a lot (or not), I laugh like crazy, I love to share my insights and be heard.

I’m not afraid to speak out my thoughts, until it reaches a point when I tend to hurt people or fuel their anger (that’s because their reception to these things……………*sigh*……… In times like these I just have to be calm, collected and relaxed otherwise the spirit of EDSA Revolution in me might be rekindled. ;)
